US Vice President JD Vance said President Donald Trump is pursuing a broad agreement with Iran rather than a limited deal, as negotiations continue following a fragile ceasefire.
Speaking at a Turning Point USA event at the University of Georgia on Tuesday (14 April), Vance linked the talks to a week-old ceasefire, describing it as a basis for wider diplomatic efforts. He said Trump is aiming for a “grand bargain” that could reshape economic ties if Iran meets key conditions.
Recent talks in Pakistan ended without agreement, amid efforts to halt the US–Israel offensive launched in February 2026. Vance said progress has been slowed by Washington’s insistence that Iran must not develop nuclear weapons.
The United States and Israel argue Iran’s nuclear programme poses a regional threat, while Tehran maintains it is peaceful. Vance acknowledged deep mistrust but said negotiations would continue in good faith.
