United Kingdom and European Union have formally signed the legal text confirming the UK’s return to the Erasmus+ student exchange programme, with participation set to begin in 2027.

The agreement, finalised in Brussels, is expected to benefit more than 100,000 students, apprentices, and young people in its first year, enabling study, training, and work placements across Europe.

• UK secures 30% discount on standard Erasmus+ contribution rate, reducing its calculated participation cost to £570 million for the 2027 Erasmus+ programme cycle

• Programme includes apprenticeships, school exchanges and cross-border projects

• Delivery linked to 2025 UK–EU Summit cooperation commitments

Skills Minister Jacqui Smith said Erasmus+ provides “transformative opportunities” that improve life chances and expand access to international experience.

EU Relations Minister Nick Thomas-Symonds described the move as part of a “reset” in UK–EU relations, aimed at strengthening cooperation post-Brexit.
