Tigray’s main political force, the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), has declared it will reassert control over the region’s government, challenging Ethiopia’s post-war settlement framework.

The TPLF accused the federal administration of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed of breaching the Pretoria Agreement, which ended the 2020–2022 Tigray war.

Former interim president Getachew Reda, now an adviser to the prime minister, described the move as a “clear repudiation” of the peace structure.

  • The TPLF alleges federal authorities withheld funding and extended the interim administration’s mandate without consultation.
  • It also claims Addis Ababa provoked renewed tensions through armed activity in the region.
  • The federal government maintains it remains committed to the Pretoria Agreement.

The African Union-mediated deal halted a conflict that killed hundreds of thousands. Recent clashes since early 2026 have heightened fears of renewed instability.
