France and Greece have renewed their bilateral defence pact, extending the 2021 agreement for five years with automatic renewal, as Europe seeks to strengthen deterrence and strategic autonomy.
French President Emmanuel Macron and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis confirmed the deal in Athens, alongside new agreements on foreign policy coordination and nuclear technology cooperation.
Macron emphasised the need for Europe to increase domestic defence production and innovation. Mitsotakis described the original pact as a precursor to broader European strategic autonomy.
Heightened security concerns have increased pressure on EU states to reinforce defence capabilities amid uncertainty over transatlantic relations.
Key developments:
- Extension of the Franco-Greek defence agreement with automatic renewal
- New cooperation in nuclear technology and foreign policy
- Missile refurbishment contract awarded to MBDA
- Joint plan for seven wind energy projects in central Greece
