Explosions and sustained gunfire have been reported in Bamako, as Mali’s military confirms ongoing operations to repel coordinated attacks across the country.

In a statement, officials said defence and security forces are actively engaged, with incidents also reported in Gao, Kidal, and Sévaré. Witnesses described clashes near Kati, a key military base outside the capital, where roads have been sealed.

Analysts, including Ulf Laessing, head of the Sahel programme at the Konrad Adenauer Foundation, described the events as one of the largest coordinated attacks in recent years.

  • The Azawad Liberation Front (FLA) reportedly targeted northern regions, seeking a Tuareg state.
  • Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) is suspected of simultaneous nationwide attacks.
  • Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, African Union Commission Chair, condemned the violence.

Unverified claims from FLA spokesperson Mohamed Elmaouloud Ramadane suggest territorial gains in Kidal and Gao.
