India and New Zealand have signed a free trade agreement in New Delhi aimed at expanding market access and strengthening economic cooperation amid global trade disruption. The deal was signed by Piyush Goyal, India’s Commerce and Industry Minister, and Todd McClay, New Zealand’s Trade and Investment Minister.
Negotiated over nine months, the agreement reduces or removes tariffs on 95% of New Zealand exports to India and grants duty-free access for all Indian exports to New Zealand.
It also includes a $20 billion New Zealand investment commitment over 15 years, as both countries seek to diversify trade ties amid US tariff pressures, China dependency concerns, and wider shipping and energy instability linked to regional conflict.
- 95% of New Zealand exports to India receive tariff cuts or elimination
- Indian exports to New Zealand gain duty-free access with $20bn investment pledge
- Key sectors include textiles, engineering goods, horticulture and meat
