Malian authorities have confirmed the death of Defence Minister Gen. Sadio Camara following coordinated attacks by jihadist fighters and separatist rebels, marking a significant escalation in the country’s ongoing security crisis.

The government, through spokesman Gen. Issa Ousmane Coulibaly, said Gen. Camara was fatally wounded after his residence was targeted by a suicide car bomb and armed assault in Bamako. The attacks, described as among the largest in recent years, also struck multiple towns and military bases.

Separatist forces claim control of Kidal, with armed forces chief Gen. Oumar Diarra confirming troop repositioning. The violence highlights growing coordination between separatists and al-Qaeda-linked militants.

Key developments:

  • Coordinated nationwide attacks involving separatists and JNIM fighters
  • Claim of separatist control over the northern city of Kidal
  • At least 16 wounded; no confirmed death toll released
  • Three-day overnight curfew imposed in Bamako

Regional bloc ECOWAS condemned the attacks, warning of wider instability across West Africa.
