King Charles III used his address to Congress to reaffirm the UK–US alliance, declaring the relationship “irreplaceable and unbreakable” amid recent diplomatic strains between London and Washington.

Speaking during a four-day state visit to the United States, King Charles III said the two countries had “always found ways to come together” despite periods of disagreement. Referring to global instability and security challenges, the monarch warned that the alliance “cannot rest on past achievements” and urged both nations to “build on” the partnership that has shaped transatlantic relations for decades.

The speech came amid growing tensions between the governments of UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and US President Donald Trump, initially driven by trade disputes and tariff threats, and more recently by divisions over Iran policy.

In the past week, reports of a leaked Pentagon memo suggesting the US may reconsider its diplomatic stance on the status of the Falkland Islands have further complicated bilateral relations.
