UK authorities have raised the national terror threat level to “severe”, the highest in over four years, following the stabbing of two Jewish men in Golders Green, north London.
The Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre (JTAC) said an attack is highly likely within the next six months, though it stressed the decision was driven by broader trends in extremist activity rather than a single incident.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the government would use the “full power of the state” to tackle antisemitism, describing such attacks as an “affront to British values”. He also called for faster sentencing and stronger enforcement against extremist threats.
The Metropolitan Police confirmed the 45-year-old suspect, a British citizen born in Somalia, had previously been referred to the Prevent programme in 2020 before the case was closed. The victims, aged 76 and 34, remain in a stable condition.
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood announced £25mn in additional security funding for Jewish communities, while warning of growing threats from Islamist, far-right, and state-linked actors.
