Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei said the future of the Persian Gulf region would be “without America”, while signalling that Tehran intends to implement new management and legal frameworks for the Strait of Hormuz.
In a written statement released on Thursday (30 April), Iran’s National Persian Gulf Day, Khamenei described foreign military presence in the region as a source of insecurity and said Iran would work with neighbouring states to shape a new regional order centred on Gulf security and economic development. He also said “a new chapter for the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz is taking shape.”
The statement also reaffirmed Iran’s commitment to maintaining what it called its national scientific and defence assets, including nuclear and missile capabilities.
The remarks come amid stalled negotiations linked to the pause in the US-Israeli war with Iran and continuing tensions surrounding access to the Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil shipping route. Energy markets remain sensitive to disruption risks in the Gulf, while Iran’s economy continues to face pressure from the conflict and sanctions.
