Support for a referendum to cap Switzerland’s population at 10 million people is rising ahead of the June 14 vote, according to new polling data.

The proposal, known as the “10mn initiative” and backed by the Swiss People’s Party, received support from 52 per cent of respondents in a survey by LeeWas. The initiative has drawn opposition from business groups and the federal government over concerns about labour shortages, economic growth and relations with the European Union.

Business organisations, including Economiesuisse, warned that tighter immigration controls could weaken Switzerland’s competitiveness and restrict access to skilled workers.

Key developments:

  • Switzerland’s population has surpassed 9 million, with foreign nationals accounting for nearly 30 per cent.
  • Critics say the proposal could breach Switzerland’s EU free movement agreements.
  • Major companies including Nestlé, Novartis, and Roche rely heavily on international talent.
  • Debate has intensified over housing shortages, infrastructure strain and long-term immigration policy.
