Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni called for a coordinated European response to interconnected geopolitical, economic, migration, and security challenges during the panel “Maintaining European unity and coherence in times of polycrisis” at the opening plenary of the 8th European Political Community (EPC) summit in Yerevan, Armenia.

Speaking alongside European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, French President Emmanuel Macron, and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer during a panel hosted by Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides, Meloni argued that modern crises were increasingly interconnected.

She said migration, energy, security, competitiveness, and democracy were all linked, warning that “we cannot simply take care of one or two facets of this crisis, but we have to tackle them all”.

Meloni said uncontrolled migration could place pressure on security, economies, and public trust in institutions, while also warning about the growing risks of disinformation and the “malicious use of artificial intelligence”.

She added that Europe must move “from our capacity to react to our capacity to anticipate”, calling for stronger long-term strategic cooperation with neighbouring regions, particularly across the Mediterranean.
