Russia and Ukraine have announced separate unilateral ceasefires amid the ongoing war, now in its fourth year.

Russian President Vladimir Putin declared a ceasefire for May 8–9 during Russia’s Victory Day commemorations, while Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced a separate ceasefire beginning at midnight on May 5–6.

Ukraine said it had received no formal notification from Moscow regarding the Russian proposal and reiterated support for a lasting ceasefire backed by security guarantees.

Key developments include:

  • Russia’s Ministry of Defence warned of “massive missile strikes” if Kyiv disrupted Victory Day events.
  • Volodymyr Zelenskyy urged Russia to pursue diplomacy over further escalation.
  • Moscow said additional security measures would protect the Victory Day parade.
  • Both sides previously accused each other of violating an Easter ceasefire announced in April.
