Israel carried out an air strike on Beirut’s southern suburbs on Wednesday (6 May), marking its first strike on the Lebanese capital since early April despite an ongoing ceasefire with Hezbollah.
In a joint statement, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defence Minister Israel Katz said the attack targeted a commander from Hezbollah’s elite Radwan unit. Lebanese authorities said the strike hit an apartment near Haret Hreik in southern Beirut.
Since the April 16 ceasefire agreement, Israel has continued near-daily strikes across Lebanon, stating operations are aimed at immediate security threats linked to Hezbollah.
Israel maintains that the ceasefire terms allow it to continue striking Hezbollah targets that it says pose an immediate threat.
Key developments:
- Nearly 100 people have reportedly been killed in Israeli strikes since the ceasefire.
- Israel has maintained a “security zone” inside southern Lebanon.
- Since the truce, Hezbollah has launched dozens of attacks, largely on Israeli ground forces inside southern Lebanon, in what it says is a response to Israel’s violations of the ceasefire agreement.
- More than 2,700 people have been killed in Lebanon by Israeli attacks since March 2, according to the Lebanese health ministry.
- Seventeen Israeli soldiers and three civilians have been killed since March 2.
