The United States has brokered a three-week extension of the Lebanon–Israel ceasefire following high-level talks at the White House on Thursday (23 April). US President Donald Trump hosted Israeli Ambassador Yechiel Leiter and Lebanese Ambassador Nada Moawad for a second round of negotiations aimed at reducing cross-border hostilities.

Trump said Washington would support Lebanon in strengthening its security, while expressing optimism about a potential peace agreement. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Lebanese President Joseph Aoun are expected to meet during the ceasefire period.

Despite reduced violence since April, clashes persist in southern Lebanon, where Israeli forces maintain a buffer zone and tensions with Hezbollah continue.

Key developments:

  • Ceasefire extended by three weeks after US-facilitated diplomacy
  • Ongoing clashes reported in southern Lebanon despite reduced violence
  • Disagreements remain over Hezbollah disarmament and Israeli troop withdrawal
  • Nearly 2,500 fatalities reported in Lebanon since March escalation

Lebanon is seeking territorial and political concessions, while Israel prioritises dismantling Hezbollah’s military presence.
