The Solomon Islands parliament has voted to remove Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele from office after he lost a confidence motion amid growing political instability in the Pacific nation.

Speaker of parliament Patterson Oti confirmed the motion passed by 26 votes to 22, with two abstentions. Following the result, Manele urged lawmakers from both sides to continue working together to deliver services and stability for the country.

The prime minister will remain in office until formally removed by the Governor General, the representative of King Charles.

Key developments:

  • The political crisis intensified after several government ministers defected to the opposition in March.
  • Courts later ordered parliament to reconvene after Manele delayed a confidence vote.
  • The Solomon Islands has drawn international attention over its expanding security and diplomatic ties with China.
  • A 2022 security agreement between the Solomon Islands and China raised concerns among the United States and regional Pacific partners.
