Speaking to reporters following meetings with senior Italian leaders in Rome on Friday (8 May), Rubio said he remained “a strong supporter of NATO” but questioned restrictions placed on the US by some alliance members during recent operations against Iran.
Rubio cited Spain as an example, saying the denial of access to certain bases had “a cost” and created some “unnecessary dangers” during ‘Operation Epic Fury’, adding that the issue “has to be examined”.
He also addressed recent US troop movements in Europe, stating that adjustments in Germany had already been planned and represented less than 14% of the overall US troop presence there.
The Pentagon last week announced plans to withdraw around 5,000 troops from Germany, with the move expected to be completed over the next six to 12 months.
Rubio said the United States must continue allocating military resources according to national interests, stating: “While we may be the most powerful country in the world and we may have the most resources, our resources are not unlimited.”
He added that President Donald Trump was still assessing future decisions regarding NATO deployments and alliance relations.
