The African Lion 2026 military exercise concluded in Morocco after weeks of joint operations involving thousands of personnel from more than 40 countries.

During the closing ceremony in Agadir, US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth praised Morocco’s role in hosting the exercise, describing the country as a key partner in regional security and defence cooperation.  

The drills, organised by US Africa Command (AFRICOM) and the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces, included land, air, maritime, cyber, and humanitarian operations across multiple locations including Agadir and Tan-Tan.  

Key developments included:

  • Nearly 5,000 personnel and over 40 participating nations.
  • Live-fire drills, special operations training, and joint air and maritime manoeuvres.
  • Expanded focus on drones, cyber defence, satellite operations, and future warfare technologies.
  • Coordinated multinational exercises aimed at improving interoperability and crisis response readiness.
