Security forces in Zawiya, western Libya, have launched a large-scale security operation after heavy clashes between rival armed groups near the city’s key oil refinery complex.
The Zawiya Security Directorate and the Joint Security Room said raids and arrests were being carried out under warrants issued by the prosecutor’s office, targeting crimes including weapons trafficking, kidnapping and organised criminal activity.
Operations at the Zawiya refinery were suspended after shells struck sensitive areas inside the complex.
- National Oil Corporation (NOC) evacuated workers and halted refinery activity as a precaution.
- Fuel supplies to Tripoli and nearby regions were reported to remain stable.
- Libya’s oil production recently reached around 1.43 million barrels per day in April and May 2026.
- Authorities aim to increase output to 1.6 million barrels per day by the end of 2026.
The clashes underline ongoing security instability in Libya despite recent recovery in the country’s oil sector and rising global demand for Libyan crude.
