Libya’s neighbouring states Egypt, Algeria and Tunisia have called for accelerating simultaneous presidential and parliamentary elections in Libya following trilateral talks in Cairo.
In a joint statement issued after a ministerial meeting under the Tripartite Neighbouring Countries Mechanism on Libya, the three countries reaffirmed support for a UN-led political process and urged Libyan parties to avoid escalation.
Libya remains politically divided between the internationally recognised government of Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh in Tripoli and a rival administration led by Osama Hammad in Benghazi.
