Libya’s neighbouring states Egypt, Algeria and Tunisia have called for accelerating simultaneous presidential and parliamentary elections in Libya following trilateral talks in Cairo.

In a joint statement issued after a ministerial meeting under the Tripartite Neighbouring Countries Mechanism on Libya, the three countries reaffirmed support for a UN-led political process and urged Libyan parties to avoid escalation.

Libya remains politically divided between the internationally recognised government of Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh in Tripoli and a rival administration led by Osama Hammad in Benghazi.

Key developments:

  • The ministers backed holding simultaneous presidential and parliamentary elections.
  • The three countries stressed the importance of stability and national unity in Libya.
  • The next trilateral meeting on Libya will be hosted in Algeria.
  • UN-backed election efforts remain stalled amid ongoing political divisions.
