Following the local election results on Thursday (7 May 2026), UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer acknowledged the outcome as “tough” and said he takes full responsibility, warning of “dangerous opponents” and potential national consequences if political direction is not corrected. He also criticised Nigel Farage, disputing Brexit-era claims on wealth, migration, and security.

Starmer said Brexit had left the UK “poorer” and “weaker”, and argued that Farage had failed to account for its outcomes. He outlined a strategic shift ahead of an upcoming EU summit, pledging to rebuild relations with Europe and reposition the UK more closely alongside European partners.

The results come amid notable gains for Reform UK and losses for both Labour and the Conservatives in several council areas, with early counts suggesting voters are increasingly moving away from the traditional two-party system.
