Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo has seen renewed movement in the ongoing conflict involving the M23 armed group, with fighters withdrawing from several areas near Uvira in South Kivu.

Local officials, residents and military representatives said the group left towns including Sange, while pro-government militia groups known as wazalendo reportedly moved into some locations afterwards.

Key developments:

  • M23 withdrew from Sange, Kabunambo, Mutarule and Bwegera.
  • The group said it was returning to positions held before its advance towards Uvira.
  • M23 continues to control Kamanyola, near the borders with Rwanda and Burundi.
  • The United States has continued to call for adherence to a ceasefire linked to ongoing peace efforts.

The mineral-rich eastern DRC has faced decades of instability involving multiple armed groups competing for territorial influence and access to mining regions.
