US President Donald Trump arrived in Beijing on Wednesday (13 May) ahead of a closely watched summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping, with discussions expected to cover trade, technology, Taiwan and broader global security issues.
Chinese officials welcomed Trump with a formal ceremony featuring military honours, diplomats and hundreds of young performers ahead of bilateral talks scheduled for Thursday.
Speaking before departing Washington, Trump described the US and China as “the two superpowers”, adding: “We’re the strongest nation on Earth in terms of military. China’s considered second.”
Trade is expected to be central to the visit, with Trump seeking expanded market access for American companies and increased Chinese purchases of US goods. Trump also said he would ask Xi to “open up” China further to American firms.
The Iran conflict may also arise during discussions. Trump told reporters: “We have a lot of things to discuss. I wouldn’t say Iran is one of them, to be honest with you, because we have Iran very much under control.”
Taiwan remains another major issue after Washington approved an $11 billion arms package for the island, which Beijing described as a “red line” in US-China relations.
