Cuba has run out of diesel and fuel oil, according to Energy Minister Vicente de la O Levy, as the country faces worsening blackouts and fuel shortages amid tightened US sanctions and restrictions on oil shipments.

Speaking to state media, de la O Levy said Cuba’s energy system was in a “critical” condition, adding that the country had “absolutely none” of its diesel and fuel oil reserves remaining. He said only limited domestic gas production was still available.

The shortages have led to widespread disruption across Havana and other regions, with some areas reportedly experiencing power cuts lasting up to 22 hours.

Key developments:

  • Hospitals, schools and government offices have faced operational disruption
  • Protests linked to prolonged blackouts were reported in Havana
  • The US renewed a $100m humanitarian aid offer tied to “meaningful reforms”
  • Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez described recent US sanctions as “illegal and abusive”
