Iraq’s new Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi has been sworn into office after parliament approved a partial cabinet, following continued disagreements over several senior ministerial positions.

According to Iraq’s official news agency, lawmakers granted confidence to Al-Zaidi’s government and ministerial programme on Thursday, allowing the administration to formally begin its duties.

Parliament approved 14 of the proposed 23 ministers, while negotiations continue over key portfolios including the interior and defence ministries.

Key developments:

  • Ali al-Zaidi became Iraq’s youngest prime minister at age 40.
  • Basim Mohammed was appointed oil minister.
  • Fuad Hussein retained his role as foreign minister.
  • Political factions remain divided over several security-related appointments.

Al-Zaidi, appointed by President Nizar Amedi in April, faces challenges including corruption, militia influence, and managing Iraq’s relations with both the United States and Iran.
