Latvian Prime Minister Evika Silina has announced her resignation following the collapse of her governing coalition after controversy surrounding Ukraine-linked drones entering Latvian airspace.

In a statement posted on X, Silina described the move as a “difficult but honest decision” and said her “responsibility to society comes above all else”. She also criticised political opponents, stating that “political envy and narrow party interests have taken precedence over responsibility”.

The political crisis intensified after Silina dismissed Defence Minister Andris Spruds over the government’s response to drone incidents near Rezekne. Spruds’s Progressives party later withdrew support from the coalition, leaving the government without a parliamentary majority ahead of Latvia’s October election.

Silina said she was “stepping down, but not giving up”, while President Edgars Rinkevics prepares consultations on forming a new government.
