Sweden has selected France’s state-owned Naval Group to build four frigates valued at around €3.7bn, ahead of bids from UK-based Babcock International, Saab, and Spain’s Navantia, as it accelerates naval modernisation in the Baltic Sea.

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said the programme would deliver one frigate per year from 2030, supporting Royal Swedish Navy upgrades. Defence Minister Pål Jonson cited Naval Group’s proven FDI frigates and faster delivery timelines.

Key developments:

  • Naval Group’s FDI frigates already in service with France and Greece
  • New vessels designed for air defence and ballistic missile interception
  • Decision reflects intensified European naval competition post-Ukraine war

The move comes amid wider NATO-aligned maritime expansion following Sweden’s accession in 2024.
