Senegal President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has dismissed Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko and dissolved the government, intensifying political uncertainty in the West African nation.

The decision follows months of reported tensions between the two leaders, who came to power in 2024 on promises of political and economic reform backed by strong youth support.

Sonko, leader of the Patriots of Senegal party, acknowledged disagreements with the president shortly before his dismissal, saying he would not “blindly obey” decisions.

Key developments:

  • Relations between Diomaye Faye and Sonko had deteriorated over economic policy and governance.
  • A 2025 audit revealed hidden national debt exceeding $40bn, more than 130% of GDP.
  • Senegal continues to face severe economic pressure, with public debt estimated at 132% of GDP, according to the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
