The European Union and Mexico have signed the Modernised Global Agreement and an Interim Trade Agreement, deepening trade, investment and digital cooperation between both economies.

The agreements were signed during the 8th EU-Mexico Summit in Mexico City by Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and European Council President Antonio Costa.

Key developments include:

  • The agreements expand cooperation in digital trade, finance, transport, clean technologies and government procurement.
  • Mexico is the EU’s second-largest trading partner in Latin America, with annual bilateral trade exceeding €100 billion.
  • The EU says the deal will remove 95% of Mexican tariffs affecting EU agri-food exports.
  • Both sides included commitments on labour rights, environmental protection, anti-corruption measures and sustainable trade.

EU officials said the agreements aim to strengthen supply chains, secure access to critical raw materials and support long-term economic competitiveness amid evolving global trade conditions.
