Benin’s new President Romuald Wadagni was inaugurated on Sunday (24 May), pledging to address growing security threats and ensure economic growth benefits citizens across the country.

The former finance minister won the April 12 presidential election with more than 94% of the vote, according to results confirmed by the Constitutional Court. He succeeds former President Patrice Talon, who stepped down after serving two constitutional terms.

Wadagni said his administration would prioritise employment, public services and social protection, while strengthening cooperation with neighbouring countries facing rising militant violence linked to Sahel-based jihadist groups.

Key developments:

  • Romuald Wadagni officially sworn in as Benin’s president for a new term.
  • Government pledges continued economic reforms and business development policies.
  • Security cooperation with Sahel neighbours expected to increase.
  • Democratic transition follows a reported coup attempt in December 2025.
