Latvia’s parliament has approved a new coalition government led by Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs, following the collapse of former Prime Minister Evika Silina’s administration over disagreements linked to drone security incidents.
The 100-seat parliament confirmed Kulbergs with support from 66 lawmakers on Thursday. The new government will lead the Baltic EU and NATO member state until parliamentary elections scheduled for October 3, 2026.
The previous coalition fell after disputes surrounding the handling of suspected Ukrainian drones that crossed into Latvian territory. Former Defence Minister Andris Spruds resigned amid criticism over the response to the incidents.
Key developments:
- Baiba Braze will remain as Latvia’s foreign minister.
- Colonel Raivis Melnis has been appointed defence minister.
- The coalition has pledged stronger border and military security.
- Latvia is expected to maintain strong support for Ukraine and its pro-EU, pro-NATO policies.
President Edgars Rinkevics backed Kulbergs earlier this month to form the new government.
