France and Indonesia have agreed to deepen bilateral cooperation following talks between President Emmanuel Macron and President Prabowo Subianto during Prabowo’s state visit to Paris on Thursday (28 May).

The two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening defence, trade, investment, climate action, education, innovation and cultural exchanges, while supporting a rules-based international order and multilateral cooperation.

Key developments:

  • Plans to strengthen defence cooperation, training programmes and defence industry collaboration.
  • Support for implementing the EU–Indonesia Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement.
  • Expanded cooperation in energy transition, critical minerals, agriculture, maritime affairs and technology.
  • Agreement to work towards establishing a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between France and Indonesia.

The leaders also discussed global issues including Ukraine, Palestine, Iran, Lebanon, maritime security, climate change, biodiversity protection and sustainable development, while reaffirming support for international law and peaceful dispute resolution.
