Speaking to reporters after signing a Strengthening Customs Enforcement executive order on Wednesday (3 June), US President Donald Trump discussed ongoing diplomacy with Iran, tensions involving Israel and Hezbollah, and the future of the Strait of Hormuz.
Trump said his administration was seeking to separate negotiations with Iran from developments involving Israel and Hezbollah, describing the situations as “a very different kind of a thing” and arguing that they should be addressed independently.
Referring to recent contacts involving Hezbollah, Trump stated: “We’re just going to see,” while expressing hope that hostilities would not resume. He also praised Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, calling him “a great partner”.
On maritime security, Trump said the Strait of Hormuz would reopen “immediately upon signing” a memorandum of understanding with Iran. He added that mine-clearing operations had already taken place and that officials believed most obstacles to shipping had been addressed.
The remarks come as diplomatic efforts and security discussions continue across the Middle East.
