The North Atlantic Council and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte visited Kyiv on Wednesday (3 June) to participate in a meeting of the NATO-Ukraine Council (NUC) and hold talks with Ukrainian leaders, including President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
During a joint press conference, Mr Rutte said Russia’s aggression “continues unabated”, describing ongoing missile and drone attacks against Ukrainian cities and infrastructure. He stated that “the danger Russia continues to pose is real” but added that NATO’s “resolve in defending ourselves and continuing to support Ukraine in the face of this threat is unshaken”.
Mr Rutte also highlighted the human and economic costs of the war, while reiterating NATO’s support for diplomatic efforts. He said the Alliance “strongly condemn[s] Russia’s aggression” and continues to call for “a negotiated peace”, adding that President Zelenskyy is “really pressing for peace”.
The visit brought together representatives of all 32 NATO Allies, underscoring the Alliance’s continued engagement with Ukraine as the conflict enters its fifth year.
Throughout the press conference, both President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte emphasised continued military support for Ukraine, particularly in air defence and missile interception capabilities.
The discussions also focused on long-term defence financing, defence-industrial cooperation, and efforts to strengthen European security. While both leaders reiterated support for diplomatic efforts to achieve peace, they stressed that sustained international assistance and pressure on Russia remain central to Ukraine’s security strategy and broader regional stability.
