Algeria has begun construction of its section of the long-planned Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline (TSGP), a major energy infrastructure project designed to transport natural gas from Nigeria through Niger and into European markets.
At a launch ceremony, Algerian Energy and Mines Minister Mohamed Arkab joined officials from Nigeria and Niger to inaugurate the first welding operations. Sonatrach, Algeria’s state-owned energy company, will build a 1,210-kilometre section connecting to the country’s existing export network and the Hassi R’Mel gas field.
Key developments
- The pipeline is expected to deliver up to 30 billion cubic metres of gas annually to Europe.
- The full project will span 4,128 kilometres across Nigeria, Niger and Algeria.
- Estimated project cost stands at $13 billion.
- Construction of the Niger section is scheduled to begin in early 2027.
The project gains momentum as Europe continues seeking diversified energy supplies amid ongoing concerns over global energy security and key maritime trade routes.
