Following talks in London with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on the next steps towards peace in Ukraine, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasised the strategic importance of the UK-Ukraine partnership for both national and European security.
In an interview with the Guardian, Zelenskyy said British support since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion has been driven by both shared values and security interests. He highlighted Ukraine’s development of maritime drone technology, stating that “it’s all about defending the coast to secure the sea”, and said Kyiv is sharing technologies and expertise with its allies.
Zelenskyy also warned against allowing disagreements to undermine long-standing partnerships, saying that “we need each other” in the face of ongoing security challenges posed by Russia.
The remarks came after European leaders reaffirmed support for Ukraine, called for an immediate ceasefire, and discussed future security guarantees, defence cooperation and preparations for upcoming G7, Coalition of the Willing and NATO meetings.
