US President Donald Trump has signalled that further American military action against Iran is likely following the downing of a US Army Apache helicopter near the Strait of Hormuz.
Speaking to reporters after signing the Secure America Act, a $70 billion package funding immigration enforcement and other Department of Homeland Security programmes, Trump said the United States would continue its response to the incident.
“We’re going to be attacking them very hard,” Trump said, adding that the US would be “resuming bombing” operations against Iranian targets.
Trump claimed the helicopter had been struck by an Iranian weapon that became lodged in the aircraft but failed to detonate, describing the survival of the crew as fortunate. He also stated that the US had already carried out strikes against Iranian targets and intended to conduct further operations.
Alongside his military warnings, Trump renewed calls for Iran to accept a proposed nuclear agreement, saying the deal would “totally prohibit” Tehran from obtaining a nuclear weapon. He argued that negotiations had come close to a breakthrough but accused Iran of delaying progress.
The remarks come after the United States launched strikes on Iranian military sites following the helicopter incident, while Iran responded with attacks targeting US military facilities in the region. The exchange has raised concerns about a broader escalation despite ongoing diplomatic efforts and a previously agreed ceasefire framework.
While Trump maintains that a diplomatic solution remains possible, his latest comments underscore the growing strain on US-Iran relations as both sides weigh military and political responses in one of the Middle East’s most strategically significant waterways.
