Violence and disorder erupted across Belfast late on Tuesday (9 Jun) and other parts of Northern Ireland following a knife attack in north Belfast that left a man seriously injured.
A 30-year-old man, Hadi Alodid, has been charged with attempted murder, possession of a bladed article in a public place, and threats to kill an NHS worker. He has been remanded in custody pending a court appearance in July 2026.
Stephen Ogilvy, the victim, remains in hospital with serious injuries. His family urged the public not to use the incident to fuel division or hostility.
Key developments:
- Police said they are not seeking anyone else in connection with the attack.
- The PSNI stated there is currently no evidence to suggest the incident was terrorism-related.
- Homes, vehicles and public property were damaged during subsequent unrest across Belfast and other locations.
- Political leaders, including First Minister Michelle O’Neill, Deputy First Minister Emma Little-Pengelly, and Prime Minister Keir Starmer, condemned the violence and called for calm.
Police investigations into both the knife attack and the subsequent disorder remain ongoing.
