US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth has warned Cuba against acquiring military systems capable of threatening the United States or the Guantánamo Bay naval base, during remarks to troops at the facility and later at MacDill Air Force Base in Florida.
He stated: “It would be unwise for the government of Cuba to try to procure or get access to the types of weapons that could reach this base or the American homeland.” He added that such actions would risk “a confrontation… they could not stand.”
Speaking separately to troops, Hegseth also said: “We’re going to be prepared to defend all the capabilities we need there,” and emphasised that military planners provide “options… at different scales” for senior decision-makers.
The comments come amid increased US pressure on Havana and ongoing strategic focus on the Caribbean region, with Washington maintaining close monitoring of potential security risks.
