UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer welcomed Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi to Downing Street on Sunday (14 Jun), describing the visit as a moment to “celebrate the strengthening of the relationship between our two countries” across technology, energy and investment.
The two leaders announced a new UK–Japan Frontier Technology Partnership, aimed at deepening cooperation in emerging technologies and strengthening long-term economic and security ties.
Technology Partnership
- Enhanced cooperation on AI, quantum computing, semiconductors, cybersecurity and advanced telecommunications.
- Joint work on space, defence technology, civil nuclear energy and healthcare innovation.
- Increased collaboration between British research institutions and Japanese industry to accelerate innovation.
Alongside the partnership, the two governments unveiled major investment commitments expected to support economic growth, infrastructure development and clean energy projects across the UK.
Investment and Economic Growth
- More than £18 billion in projected economic gains and support for tens of thousands of jobs.
- Over £9 billion in Japanese investment across infrastructure, property and financial services.
- Up to £9 billion earmarked for UK offshore wind projects and clean energy development.
Starmer added it was a “very special moment” to host Takaichi on her first visit, reflecting the growing strategic depth of the UK–Japan relationship.
