The United States has launched an investigation into Germany’s pharmaceutical pricing policies, examining whether the country’s reimbursement system for innovative medicines is unreasonable or discriminatory and restricts US commerce, according to US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer.

The investigation follows discussions between both governments and comes as Germany considers healthcare reforms aimed at reducing a projected €20 billion funding gap. The Office of the US Trade Representative (USTR) has requested consultations with Germany as part of the process.

Key developments:

  • Jamieson Greer said the US is concerned Germany could further reduce payments for innovative pharmaceutical products.
  • US Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said fair reimbursement is important to support future pharmaceutical research and development.
  • Written submissions are due by 10 August, with a public hearing scheduled for 22 September 2026.

The investigation will assess whether Germany’s pharmaceutical pricing and reimbursement practices place a disproportionate share of global research and development costs on the United States. Depending on its findings, the probe could lead to further trade action.
