United States Vice President JD Vance said the US is seeking to reshape its relationship with Iran through diplomacy as negotiations continue in Burgenstock, Switzerland, alongside mediators from Qatar and Pakistan.
Speaking at the opening of the talks, Vance said Washington’s objective was to help transform relations across the Middle East and encourage greater regional stability. He said the United States was prepared to improve ties with Iran if its leadership abandoned what he described as regional destabilisation and ended its long-term nuclear weapons ambitions.
Vance described the discussions as “the beginning of a technical negotiation”, saying they would allow both sides to meet directly and identify priorities for resolving outstanding issues. He also said President Donald Trump had asked the US delegation to “turn over a new leaf” in relations with Iran by extending “an outstretched hand” if conditions for improved relations were met.
The talks follow a 60-day ceasefire extension agreed earlier this week and come amid continued regional tensions involving Lebanon and the Strait of Hormuz.
