The European Union and Moldova have reaffirmed their commitment to closer political, economic and security cooperation during the second EU–Moldova Summit in Brussels on Monday (22 Jun), as the country continues its EU accession process.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, European Council President António Costa and Moldovan President Maia Sandu reviewed progress following the opening of Moldova’s first accession negotiation cluster on 15 June.

Key developments:

  • €232.7 million announced to upgrade the Porumbrei–Comrat road under Moldova’s Growth Plan.
  • Around €504 million has already been disbursed through the EU’s €1.9 billion Growth Plan.
  • New €11 million and €17 million packages will strengthen resilience against hybrid threats and improve border infrastructure.

The joint declaration also reaffirmed support for Moldova’s sovereignty, democratic reforms, gradual integration into the EU single market, and expanded cooperation on security, transport, energy, education and digital connectivity. The leaders committed to maintaining momentum in Moldova’s merit-based path towards EU membership.
