US Vice President JD Vance said negotiations with Iran in Bürgenstock, Switzerland had established “a very good foundation for a successful final deal”, while stressing that further work remains before any agreement is finalised.
Vance said the talks achieved four principal objectives. He stated that negotiators had put in place a mechanism to help keep the Strait of Hormuz open and coordinate future demining efforts, adding that this had contributed to the resumption of energy shipments. He also said a regional deconfliction mechanism had been established to help prevent future incidents from escalating into wider conflict.
On the nuclear issue, Vance described Iran’s agreement to readmit International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) inspectors as “a major milestone” and “the first step in permanently denuclearizing” Iran’s nuclear programme. He added that negotiators had also agreed a framework for technical discussions, with teams from the United States, Iran, Qatar, and Pakistan set to continue negotiations in the coming weeks.
Summing up the outcome, Vance said the parties had “done exactly what we wanted to do” and compared the current stage of negotiations to laying “the foundation” for a future agreement, while cautioning that “there is still a lot to do”.
A joint statement from the State of Qatar and the Islamic Republic of Pakistan said the talks concluded in a “positive and constructive atmosphere”, confirming the establishment of a High Level Committee, a roadmap towards a final agreement within 60 days, continued technical negotiations, and new coordination mechanisms aimed at supporting regional stability and the safe passage of commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz.
