Malaysia and Bangladesh have agreed to expand cooperation across trade, investment, defence, labour, education and the digital economy following Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s official visit to Malaysia, where he met Malaysian Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

The leaders reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations and signed several cooperation documents while discussing regional and international issues.

Key developments:

  • Malaysia–Bangladesh Free Trade Agreement negotiations are progressing, with both sides aiming to conclude talks in 2027.
  • Cooperation will expand in AI, semiconductors, cybersecurity, halal industry, energy, infrastructure and education.
  • Both countries agreed to resume bilateral consultation mechanisms and strengthen labour, defence and security cooperation.

The leaders also discussed the Rohingya crisis, Bangladesh’s ASEAN engagement, regional trade integration and support for continued diplomatic efforts in the Middle East.
