UN Secretary-General António Guterres has outlined a seven-point blueprint to accelerate the global clean energy transition, arguing that reducing reliance on fossil fuels is essential for addressing both climate change and energy security.

Speaking at London Climate Action Week on Tuesday (23 Jun), Mr Guterres called for faster emissions cuts, greater investment in renewable energy, increased climate finance for developing countries, and stronger support for adaptation and resilience.

Key developments:

  • Net zero by 2050 with rapid emissions reductions and global methane cuts.
  • Greater investment in renewable energy, while ending subsidies for new fossil fuel projects.
  • AI companies urged to power data centres with 100% renewable energy by 2030.
  • Expanded climate finance and adaptation funding for developing nations.

Mr Guterres said renewable energy costs continue to fall and described clean energy as the most effective path towards long-term energy independence, economic resilience and climate stability.
