France and Italy have reaffirmed their strategic partnership following the 36th Franco-Italian Summit, outlining closer cooperation on European security, competitiveness, defence, migration, energy and digital policy under the Quirinal Treaty.

The joint statement commits both countries to supporting Ukraine, strengthening European defence capabilities, advancing EU competitiveness and expanding cooperation across the Mediterranean, Africa and the digital economy. 

It also highlights plans to coordinate on climate action, space policy, infrastructure and youth mobility while promoting a more resilient and strategically autonomous European Union.

Key developments:

  • France and Italy pledged continued political, economic, humanitarian and military support for Ukraine and backed additional sanctions on Russia.
  • Both countries committed to deeper cooperation on European defence, energy security, AI, semiconductors, space and industrial competitiveness.
  • Leaders agreed to strengthen joint action on migration, organised crime, climate resilience and cross-border transport infrastructure.

The declaration also sets out a long-term roadmap for expanding Franco-Italian cooperation across diplomacy, trade, research, education and culture while supporting wider EU integration and strategic priorities.
