Speaking to Sky News on the sidelines of the NATO Summit 2026, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer criticised Nigel Farage, accusing the Reform UK leader of avoiding scrutiny from journalists and Parliament.
Starmer described Farage’s decision to resign as MP for Clacton and trigger a by-election—while seeking re-election amid scrutiny over a £5 million donation and other financial declarations—as “a complete stunt”.
He said Farage had been “utterly exposed”, accusing him of avoiding questions from journalists and Parliament, and adding Farage is “up to his neck in sleaze”. Farage denies any wrongdoing and says the by-election will allow voters to decide the issue directly.
Reflecting on his own tenure, Starmer defended his leadership of the Labour Party, saying he had helped rebuild the party after the 2019 election, root out antisemitism and deliver one of only three Labour landslide general election victories.
He added: “I accept that answer in good grace”, referring to Labour’s decision on its next leader, and said his focus was now on ensuring “an orderly transition” so that “a Labour government… and my country” continue to succeed.
The interview comes after Starmer announced he would step down as Prime Minister and Labour leader following mounting political pressure after Labour’s electoral setbacks. He has said he will remain in office until a successor is chosen, pledging his “full and unequivocal support” during the transition.
