Syria’s new parliament convened in Damascus for the first time on Sunday (12 Jul), marking a significant step in the country’s political transition 19 months after President Ahmed al-Sharaa led the removal of Bashar al-Assad.
Addressing lawmakers, al-Sharaa urged the chamber to uphold responsibility, competence and justice as Syria continues its constitutional transition.
Under interim arrangements, the 210-seat parliament has limited legislative powers until a permanent constitution is adopted and national elections are held. Abdel Halim al-Awak was elected speaker and parliament is expected to help establish a committee to draft a new constitution.
