The European Union has strengthened its sanctions regime on Sudan, introducing new measures aimed at restricting financial sources linked to the country’s ongoing conflict.
The Council of the EU announced a ban on the purchase, import and transfer of Sudanese gold, alongside restrictions on the export of mercury and cyanide used in gold mining.
Key developments:
- The measures target elements of Sudan’s war economy believed to help sustain the conflict.
- Related services, including financial assistance, brokering and technical support connected to restricted goods, are also prohibited.
- Exceptions remain for humanitarian purposes, public health emergencies and disaster response.
The EU said the decision forms part of wider efforts to pressure those fuelling the conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which began in April 2023.
